Find an Open Area
Stand in a clear, visible location where rescuers can see you.
Aim the Mirror at the Sun
Hold out one arm and point it at the target (area, aircraft, people, boat…)
Create a “V” shape with two fingers.
With the other hand, hold the mirror and turn it until sunlight reflects onto the “V” made by your other hand. .
If your mirror has a sighting hole, look through it.
Move the reflected light between your fingers to ensure the flash is aimed at the target.
Flash the Signal
Tilt the mirror back and forth to create noticeable flashes of light.
Continue Signaling
Keep flashing the mirror at intervals until you get a response.
If an aircraft is circling, continue flashing to guide them to your location.
In some conditions, signal mirrors can be seen from tens of miles away, especially by aircraft.
